I took a call today from Elaine about her upcoming reservation, and she was so enthused about the fireplace where she stayed last year that I just had to go and look up her accommodation. She’s so right! That fireplace in Gray Gull I is fascinating, full of glittery bits and surprises poked in among the larger fieldstones. Shown here are pictures of the fireplace, and a picture OF a picture of the fireplace, gentleman fishers and all.
And of course I do believe (I’d better check) it’s the oldest on the property, going back to 1916. Gray Gull I and II evolved out of Green Camp, which was the original main lodge here at Migis. The common living room was the gathering spot for the eight sleeping rooms that shared it. One of my favorite bedrooms is here, too, tiny and cozy and made for piney dreams.
Give Scott and Robyn a call at 207-655-4524; we may have those perfect Maine vacation dates you’re hoping for!
might not fully realize what it means to see our thermometer at this level on April 2! To be able to walk about in a t-shirt enjoying the sounds and sights of spring is such a pleasure. This is a day full of new life, new projects, new staff interviews, and familiar faces appearing to see, well, what’s new! Have you met Eldren? I interrupted him having his lunch in his truck—————he’s busy turning on the water all over the property, as he has for 26 years now. He must have been in junior high school when he started!
Earlier today, the bearded one and myself took an eight mile walk to benefit the Casco and Raymond food pantries. Perfect day for it.
Robyn is hearing more and more from the spring bridal parties; only a month until the first. She is still ready to take your 2010 reservation calls as well!
…but if it were it would come in handy today. The wind is howling out there, and the rain just keeps on coming! Here, a few days ago, is our neighbor further west along 302, in Naples. The Songo River Queen has been stylishly (basic black) wrapped for the winter and will emerge soon for another season of meandering up and down Long Lake. We do have plenty to do (or not do as may be your preference) here at the Lodge, but now and then it’s pleasant to get out and see what else the Lakes Region has to offer!
Scott’s away this week, but Robyn will be happy to answer your reservation inquiries at 207-655-4524 or migis@migis.com. And we are going to assume that this spring rain will make for a lush, flowery and green early summer!
…and better yet after a visit to the wooded wellness center. What a location for a massage! The guys are on another remodeling project now as I found when I wandered down the path following the sound of the circular saw into the woods. Also overseeing the work was Adam’s new rescued dog Annie. Welcome aboard, Annie!
Like many in the east, we’re having some peculiar weather here in Maine. We’ve had a lot of melting, to the dismay of the ski areas AND our basements, and now the sun is peeking through what has been a rainy morning. Then again, many inches of snow are anticipated for the weekend. Who knows? All of this brings out the longing for ease and comfort, which we have in abundance here at Migis through all seasons! On comfortable beds throughout the property are beautiful examples of that very American art form, the handmade quilt. A Trip Around the World or a Log Cabin are the perfect accessory to a lazy July afternoon nap, or after a hike on a crisp October afternoon.
Whether you are a quilt fancier, in search of a show, or a vacationer in search of the Maine experience, we offer access to either or both!
Wow, these gentlemen work quickly in these wintery conditions, enhancing the other seasons for the rest of us! Good work, guys. Making a beautiful walk even better.
We have a hearty crew here at Migis, summer and winter. The onset of (almost) winter provides the time and focus for working on the checklist that we develop while we are open to you folks. Here Phil and Ian, Adam and Colby, and supervisor Winnie are moving ahead with trail improvements, making your summer walks through the woods even more enjoyable.
Closing dinner at Migis Lodge has been, for many years, an occasion to shine for one more night before we put the Migis social season to bed for the winter. This year we honored our Pine Tree State home with a meal and setting paying homage to its beauty and creative strengths. Surrounded by stacked firewood and pine trees, at tables decorated with birch boughs and forest greenery, our guests enjoyed the gentle humor of special guest Tim Sample, followed by a meal featuring All Things Maine. We are so fortunate to live amid such abundance!
Kudos especially to florist Marcia Davis and executive chef John Strain for this memorable evening.
Julie and Howie, long time Migis guests, decided that there was no better way to celebrate the birth of their lovely granddaughter Madeline than with glass in hand from their porch overlooking Sebago Lake. They had been saving this special 1972 wine for such an event and setting—–we at Migis congratulate the family for this beautiful addition to their family, and for their good taste in locations!
Also, among the several outings Migis guests could choose to take this week was a visit to the Shaker village http://www.shaker.lib.me.us/ in New Gloucester. It was a fascinating look at this historical community of the last surviving Shakers, their dwellings and workshops and meeting house——AND one of the sisters came inquiring after our tour group, fascinated by the garment on one of the gentlemen! He was wearing a ‘utili-kilt’. Our guide said it was the first time in her four years of showing folks around that one of the residents had approached a visitor….
Seen around——innkeeper Joan this week marked the 30th anniversary of her first arrival here at Migis Lodge!…………………here she finds her parents’ checkin from 1979 noted in our red book and shares the memory with her friend Louise.
For those who admire our handmade quilts here at Migis Lodge (such as this one from Naples’ Linda Horne), you may be interested in the upcoming quilt show in Augusta.
And, closer to home, next week is the 75th Annual Casco Days celebration right over Quaker Ridge from here! Come enjoy the old fashioned merry-go-round, beano tent, Thursday fireworks and people watching in Beautiful Downtown Casco.
Of course, staying right here at Migis Lodge for tennis, waterskiing, wonderful meals and reading under the pines may be the best July activity of all………………….
