“Some men go through a forest and see no firewood”

Not us!  We do see Maine forests, trees, fireplaces and firewood here!  And so do our guests and visitors, who ask numerous questions about it.  What kind is it?  Wow, what do you use it for?  How much do you use?  And, really, just what is a cord?  Well, it’s 128 cubic feet.  Okay, four feet by four feet by eight feet, stacked.  Of course, it doesn’t arrive stacked.  And, unlike the oil truck, there is no meter on the delivery truck, but it’s measured as the truck is loaded.  (Careful shaking hands; watch out for splinters!)  Mixed in there are sugar maple, red maple, oak, ash, and a little bit of birch.  (Peel off a layer and write a love note while you’re here.)  It all gets to rest outdoors here at Migis for a year before it moves to a fireplace.  It moves from truck to parking lot area and other spots where you see the beautiful fresh walls, then nearer to the cottages where the more seasoned product is.  Don’t want to burn green firewood!

Let’s do a little math…..we have 35 cottages and 6 lodge rooms, and then there’s the main lodge and Boulders, so how many fireplaces?  Well, plenty, to the tune of about thirty cord a year.  AND it comes in three lengths, for various size fireboxes.

So, when you check in, walk down to your cottage and have a look at the fire that’s already been laid for you.  The cabin gentlemen didn’t just lay the fire.  They’ve been moving that firewood for a year or two, bringing it ever closer to your fireplace to create just the right feeling of warmth and aroma and comfort and pleasure for when you light it.  There’s a box of matches right on the mantel waiting for you!
