One of the great things about being around Migis Lodge year after year is being able to stand on the sidelines and observe as our guests arrive and eagerly seek out and greet their ‘vacation’ friends. It is our job to treat our beautiful setting with respect and care in regards to buildings and grounds and so forth, and supply the lodging and meals and activities that facilitate a memorable experience, but it also is in large measure how our guests treat each other that makes this place so special. Some weeks here, this among them, take on a feeling very similar to a family reunion, with whoops and cries and catching up and pictures and celebrations and traditions………it’s so cool!
This group has evolved an amazing and ambitious tradition; swimming the mile to Millstone Island, where we serve lunch every Wednesday. Yesterday the group grew to 21. Who started it? Well, that can be a matter for long discussion. Maybe Bob R was the inspiration. I think I’ll ask Barbara. She brought the orange bathing caps. No, Barbara’s not sure–ask Kyle, she’ll know. Well, I was a camper and the first year I wasn’t at camp, we did it. But it wasn’t so many….why don’t you ask Judy? I think she has pictures…Judy is pretty sure that Mitch will know. Mitch usually is a spotter.
Tara, how long have we been doing this? Well, at least 6 or 7 years.
Today it took about 40 minutes.
A couple of years ago, really rough beyond the first island, about an hour and a quarter. Of course, the third group uses noodles……………..
the hardest part? Getting up over the rocks at the island. They’re so slippery! We need a designated rock puller………….
and of course that’s Sandy, with the flowery bathing cap. Can’t miss her! And Quinn, kinda……………..she got pulled in a tube.
And you know, Rachel really fell in love with Carter when he helped push her through this swim
And maybe Kyle is the one who bought the bathing caps? Another hard part is when we can start smelling the food cooking on the island!
One year it rained and about 15 of us got on the Tykona and got dropped in the water about halfway there. We were crazy, so determined to have our island swim!
And David and Palmer, and Alex and Johnny and Julie, and Sadie, and Geoff (thanks for spotting this year!) and Tyler and Nancy and Zack and Samantha and Allyson……………Zack and Judd, we missed you this year! And other guests this week, thanks for letting us use the kayaks and canoes to keep our swimmers safe!
Captain Tim touts this as Migis’ only weight loss program; says he has done a scientific study that demonstrates a reduced appetite at lunch from this strenuous exercise.
