In like a lion! March brings a welcome storm to Migis Lodge.

Snow day!  Overnight, the Casco landscape has changed.  We were seeing too many remnants of the fall’s piles of raked leaves, and too few illustrations of the glorious winter landscapes we perhaps take for granted!  Now, the first day of March has roared in, and we were all indoors watching the forecast 6 to 10 inches blow, drift, swirl, fall.  On January 1, the color dominating the Migis landscape was brown.  Blue sky, sparkling lake, even birds chirping here and there, true, but way too soon for us!  Yesterday’s weather was more in keeping with the boots and coats near the front door.

New Year's Day 2012, on the Migis driveway

It’s a day tailor made for our team effort of assembling the 2012 Spring Tonic.  We call it a winter job, because that provides good cover for what is actually so enjoyable; looking over last year’s photos, choosing some to refresh our memories of the season, going over the winter checklist of all the behind the scenes jobs being accomplished, highlighting some of the year round staff.  And, oh, reminding folks that if your confirmation letter is not yet in hand, this is the time to firm up your dates!

March 2; this is more like it!

I just took a look back to Spring Tonic 50 years ago.  One announcement for that upcoming season was that Buffet night would be moved to Saturday, and breakfast cookout to Sunday.  Wow!  Fifty years of that tradition.  And I counted 17 cottages on the rate sheet, plus Green Camp (now Gray Gull I and II) and the Main Lodge.  The Spring Tonic was introduced at Migis in 1945, so if any of you have a copy of that one, or 1946 through 48, I would sure love to borrow them to scan for our archives.  We have many of them carefully preserved, but not all, so it would be great to have a complete collection.  Some of our guests have generously provided us with memorabilia through the years and it is so appreciated.  Imagine family vacation photos from the 20s and 30s.  Out of the drawers and onto the scanners!  Do please write migismary@live.com if you have materials we can respectfully borrow.

Here’s a peek at that 1962 Spring Tonic.  Hard to believe that’s 50 years, but apparently that’s how the math works out!  I love the Happy Vacation paragraph and hope we are all still successfully striving for just these details, like the Crocketts were then.

Now, really, we’d better get back to that “job”!  Enjoy March, wherever you are.

Mary
